Foreign PEPs refer to persons who occupy an important position in foreign governments (foreign heads of state, etc.) as well as persons who have held such positions, their families, and legal entities controlled by such persons.
Foreign PEPs include:
1. Foreign heads of state
2. Those who hold the equivalent of the following Japanese positions in foreign countries:
- Prime Minister, other Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers
- Lower house chair or vice-chair, Upper house chair or vice-chair
- Supreme Court judge
- Ambassadors, government representatives, diplomats, or other special envoys
- Joint Chief (or Deputy Chief) of Staff, Chief (or Deputy Chief) of Land Staff, Chief (or Deputy Chief) of Maritime Staff, Chief (or Deputy Chief) of Aviation Staff
- Central Bank official
- Corporate executives whose budget must be approved by the Diet or other government body
3. Those who previously held positions listed in 1. or 2.
4. Family members of 1.～ 3.
Family members to be recognized as foreign PEPs are:
- Spouses (including those who have not reported marriage but are in fact married)
- Parents
- Children (including non-biological children)
- Siblings
- Mothers-in-law and Fathers-in-law
5. Corporations in which persons identified as 1.～4. have controlling interests
* Foreign PEPs include international organizations such as the United Nations (organizations established through formal political agreements between member states with the right to conclude treaties) and those who have important public status with the Government of Japan, etc.
* There is no stipulation for the elapsed period since retirement.
